Company Culture and Values
A company’s culture is a set of norms and values that are widely shared and strongly held throughout the organisation. All organisations have a culture and values, but they may not be clearly defined and communicated to employees and other stakeholders. Yet, clear and visible company values, which shape culture, are a powerful advantage in helping you to:
- attract and retain valued employees
- improve employee performance
- differentiate your brand
- build strong relationships with your customers, suppliers and others
Since individuals’ behaviour is fashioned by their own core values, a company will only have a strong and unified culture if your employees have personal values that are in alignment with your company core values.
We can help you to consider and define your organisational culture and values, integrate them into assessments for your recruitment, development, leadership and other talent management processes, and communicate them to your employees.
Then, for company values to work, they must be reflected in the day-to-day actions of employees. So, how do we measure this? We can create a customised Company Values set and this will be included in each and every job specification. This will then be used as part of the assessment process for all job candidates and employees. This means hiring of new people and review of employee development can incorporate measured alignment to your company’s values.
The most important factor – the executive team has to ‘live’ the values. Employees will look to the CEO and the executive team, for direction and examples of behaviour based on your company’s values, especially by the CEO. If the CEO doesn’t lead, the values will not stick.
Organisation openness is an example of a company value seen to have increasing importance, as clearly illustrated in an IBM survey of CEOs worldwide. They believe it will have the greatest impact on their organisations of all business factors and this emphasis on openness is 30% higher among outperforming businesses. And to draw out the best in their workforces, CEOs are most focused on three organisational attributes – ethics and values (65%), collaborative environment (63%) and purpose (58%).
Consider the following recommendations from the IBM CEO Survey report:
- Confront cultural reality. Take a hard look at your corporate character — not the reputation you intend to project, but what is actually revealed through the decisions and actions of employees and leaders
- Build values employees will live out. Allow the organization to collectively compose its core values. Thinking and behaving in ways consistent with the organisation’s values cannot be induced. Employees must truly believe in it and help create it.
Boardroom Effectiveness
Clearly, the effective working together of the members of your Board is the most critical and influencing team interaction in your organisation. And employees will look to the CEO and the executive team, for direction and examples of behaviour based on your company’s values, especially by the CEO. If the CEO doesn’t lead, the values will not stick.
The Boardroom Effectiveness session is based upon a facilitated workshop approach, and, as its name describes, is focused on the effective working together of your Board members.
Pre-workshop, each Board member undertakes an assessment, which provides for individual and team reports to be available for discussion in the workshop session. Team Paradox analysis gives in-depth insights into the dynamic balance of the Board.
The workshop focuses on the practical aspects of team effectiveness and the areas covered include:
- Team dynamics
- Clarity of roles
- Alignment on values, strategy and priorities
- Board composition/balance
- Board processes – board preparation, meeting management, and communications
The workshop content can be varied to suit your particular requirements.
